A friend of mine shared a fantastic idea – mixing up regular Christmas rhythms and traditions with something new and different. This family had entered a new phase in family life with grown children, and no more little ones to enjoy the holidays at this point. Why not try something completely different, adjusted for an all-adults holiday season? The natural rhythms of this transition made this an ideal time for the family to make some changes. This family decided to take their adult children shopping. Mom and Dad had drinks in a local bar and grill, and the kids took their Christmas money and bought gifts. The game was whoever spent as close to all their money, won. No gift cards, no spending over the amount given them – no cheating. Meet for dinner afterwards and share stories. Sounds like fun. A family might edit that a bit – maybe make the adult siblings buy gifts for each other. Maybe make them go shopping together. There are lots of variations depending on your family dynamics to make Christmas with adult children fun. As little ones come back on the scene, as they always do, don’t forget about your fun young adults and how they enjoy Christmas differently. In fact, we all enjoy Christmas differently – take responsibility for your Christmas enjoyment and include a tradition that you like. You can guarantee yourself a good Christmas if you choose to include what you love – and sharing that with others brings even greater joy.
