Personal User Manual

Have you ever heard of a “Personal User Manual”? The concept is similar to that of a user manual for a tool, or some type of instrument. The idea is that, if not handled properly, this tool can be dangerous.

People are complex. And different. What makes one person tick does not work on everybody. The idea of a “Personal User Manual” is a way of presenting yourself – your needs, wants, and desires to others in a way that allows them to communicate and relate to you effectively. There are many ways to present your user manual in a consumable way, and maybe even a little funny. Let's start with the content. Here are some questions to ask yourself as you build your “Personal User Manual”.

Question 1: What motivates me: When do I lose track of time because I am so immersed and joyful in what I am doing?

Reflect on moments of “flow” where you are deeply engaged and inspired.
Encourage others to use that information to connect with you and get your brain working and thinking creatively.

Question 2: What frustrates me: In what circumstances do I find myself withdrawing or becoming unmotivated?

Reflect on what saps your energy and zest in a way that causes you irritation and shut down.
Encourage others to use that information to approach certain topics with you with a level of understanding these can be difficult and challenging conversations for you.

Question 3: How I communicate: Do I feel most comfortable expressing myself through writing, speaking, or visually?

Consider specific times and instances when you prefer in-personal communication verses digital communication.
Encourage others to be open to communicating with you in ways that may be uncomfortable for them.

Question 4: My Superpower: What are some of your unique talents and abilities that allow you to thrive in particular situations?

Here’s where you excel and thrive – where people can count on you to show up and be your best.
Encourage others to use this information to tap into your strengths and skillset to help them solve problems.

Insight of Others

As I wrestle with knowing and understanding myself, there is space for other’s thoughts. Other people can be very insightful as to your strengths and weaknesses in a way you don’t readily see. One avenue for this reflection is your annual reviews – your work assessments. Your employer most likely has at times, formally or informally, given you feedback on the work you are doing. Take some time to re-read or consider their input. What surprises you about what they said? What is old information you’ve heard before? Take notes and jot your thoughts down as you begin to assimilate your Personal User Manual this month.

A genuine friend who can be honest as well as kind proves invaluable to self-discovery. They see things you don’t and are a part of your interactions with others that you likely internalize and tend to miss significance. Be vulnerable with one trusted friend and try to genuinely hear what they are saying. No need for a response from you - just listen. Then process.

Inspirational Books

What is the best way to start off the New Year? With a book, of course! Here are three “beginning of the year” books that I like.

Successful Women Speak Differently by Valorie Burton. This practical book has nine helpful habits that build confidence and courage. Change your perspective and your speech will follow.

Atomic Habits by James Clear. If you haven’t heard of habit-stacking, this is a must-read for you. It outlines a step-by-step guide and practical application to taking small steps to live your life more effectively.

12 Rules for Life by Jordan Peterson. I appreciate that while he is not a faith-based author, he is a faith-based person. His faith may look a little different than mine, but it is very informative to other’s perspectives on life and faith. I find his work interesting.
